Dan Bontz has been a police officer with the City of Loveland since 1998 and is currently assigned to the Northern Colorado Drug Task Force (NCDTF) as a narcotics detective. Dan has spent over 19 years working in narcotics and is currently an Advisory Board member for the Voices for Awareness/Facing Fentanyl Foundation and the Colorado Drug Investigators Association (CDIA). Dan has also previously served on the Larimer County Wellness Court Team, led by the now retired Honorable Larimer County District Court Judge Julie Field. Dan believes in creating strong partnerships with foundations and community organizations in order to assist family members and loved ones of those who are struggling or have lost their struggle due to the fentanyl/opioid crisis. Dan has experienced, firsthand, the devasting results of this crisis, both personally and professionally.
During his career, Dan was previously assigned to the NCDTF, from October 2009 to December 2013 where he held a Narcotics Detective position. While previously at the NCDTF, Dan was assigned as a Task Force Officer (TFO) to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Strike Force Group based out of the DEA Denver, Colorado Field Division Office, from December 2013 to October 2015. The DEA Strike Force Group was a multi-jurisdictional drug task force comprised of local, State, and Federal Law Enforcement officers, which investigated felony drug violations and associated drug trafficking organizations.
Dan was previously assigned to the Loveland Police Department Street Crimes Unit from April 2002 to June 2008 and again from April 2016 to April 2021. Since April of 2021, Dan has been reassigned to the NCDTF as a narcotics detective and has completed over 1500 hours of specialized training courses in narcotics related investigations. Dan is familiar with many commonly abused illegal drugs, including, but not limited to: fentanyl, methamphetamine, heroin, and cocaine, and is familiar with the appearance, common methods of use, packaging, and concealment for these drugs as well as slang terms frequently used to refer to drugs.
