Tenant Bankruptcy

Karen Kelly-Braem, Attorney/Partner at Springman, Braden, Wilson & Pontius, P.C.

Karen was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA.  She moved to Colorado in 1983, and began her legal career a few years later. She is licensed in Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Alaska. Karen has been in the legal field for over 30 years. She was a paralegal for 20 years over which time she became proficient at time management, court processes and legal procedures. As an attorney, she has assisted companies in developing procedures and processes that have earned or saved tens of thousands of dollars. She has trained the legal staff related to court procedures, and developed collection processes for other states. She has organized, obtained and maintained collection licenses for all states. Karen has handled, responded to and/or resolved disputes related to the BBB, CFPB, and FDCPA complaints filed or threatened by opposing counsel.  Aside from collections litigation, her specialty lies in consumer related bankruptcy issues. She has set up processes to assist in identifying bankruptcy issues, and the filing of proofs of claims that have proven to generate income for the company. She has trained others on the basics of bankruptcy, including the personnel at a local court.  Her work experience includes 30 years of consumer related bankruptcy proceedings, 10 years in domestic law, over 12 years of collections litigation and more than 2 years of foreclosures. She has also handled probate matters, the most extensive (to date) involving an estate in excess of $8 million dollars.   Karen is a partner at Springman, Braden, Wilson & Pontius, P.C. where they specialize in evictions, collections, HOA law and Fair Housing defense.

Tom Koch, CIH of Vertex Companies, Inc.

Thomas D. Koch, CIH has a dynamic background in the fields of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Health & Safety, having been employed nearly 30 years in industry and private practice. Mr. Koch is a Certified Industrial Hygienist with a Master’s Degree in Environmental Policy and Management from the University of Denver. Mr. Koch is Vice-President of Industrial Hygiene services for The Vertex Companies, Inc., a nationwide engineering and environmental consulting firm specializing in the comprehensive fields of Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Safety and Health.

Mr. Koch is an adjunct Professor at the University of Denver teaching in the Environmental Policy and Management Master’s Degree program curriculum, with a specialty in Environmental Safety and Health. Master’s level courses taught by Mr. Koch include OSHA Law, Workplace Safety Management, and Environmental Safety and Health.

Thomas Koch is certified as a methamphetamine-affected property consultant in the state of Colorado and is also CDPHE-certified as an instructor for the Methamphetamine-Affected Property Consultant Training course. Koch Environmental Health, Inc. is currently the only organization certified by the State of Colorado to provide the Methamphetamine-Affected Property Consultant Training certification course to industrial hygienists. Tom has been performing work involving meth labs and meth-affected properties since the early 2000s and participated in the regulatory stakeholder meetings pertaining to the development of Colorado’s methamphetamine regulations.

Mr. Koch was a presenter for Professional Development Course (PDC) at AIHCE 2011 and also presented to the Canadian Association of Occupational Hygienists in 2012.

Publications: Mr. Koch was a primary author of the AIHA’s publication Clandestine Methamphetamine Laboratory Assessment and Remediation Guidance, American Industrial Hygiene Association, 2007.

Studying and Living in the United States: International Student Needs and Expectations

In this session we will review international student experiences and needs from before arrival at CSU to after departure: How do we help students understand the processes, costs, and laws related to landlord/tenant relationships, what cultural general information can help us to faciliate positive communications, and how do we navigate cultural misunderstandings?  Additionally, we will discuss what you can do to assist students throughout their time living with you.

Christie Mathews, Director of Apartment Life, Colorado State University

Christie Mathews has worked with international students and scholars in CSU University Housing for more than 19 years where more than 70% of residents in graduate and family housing are from other countries. She has served as director of the University apartments for 12.5 years.  CSU University Housing strives to create vibrant and inclusive communities throughout students’ on campus housing experience which enhance learning, personal and social growth, and global engagement.  Christie has a personal commitment to understanding the values and behaviors of people from around the world as it relates to academic success.

Michael Durkin, Education Specialist at Poudre Fire Authority

Michael Durkin has been the Education Specialist for the Poudre Fire Authority in Colorado for four years. Prior to this, his focus was on international development and he’s worked in education on four continents. He holds a Master’s Degree in Diplomacy from the American Graduate School in Paris and a Bachelors in Sociology from Emmanuel College, Boston.
